Klaserie Private Nature Reserve

Be welcome in this home of the Endless View

The KPNR is one of the largest privately owned nature reserves in South Africa, covering some 60 000 hectares and is part of the greater Kruger National Park.

With the Klaserie river bisecting the reserve on its path to Olifants and Mocambique, this reserve has it all, from the wonderful birdlife, to the spectacular fauna and flora, the Klaserie has something for everyone.

This unfenced, untamed wilderness is where you will find Makumu, an oasis of luxury surrounded by the harshness, unpredictability and unspoiled appeal of the African bushveld.

The Klaserieriver

Rivers are the life blood of the bush, all living creatures depend on them to survive.

The true lifeblood of the reserve, supplying countless numbers of game with life sustaining water, especially in the drier winter months when the summer rain-filled hollows, depressions and natural pans have all dried up. With it’s origins south of the reserve the Klaserie river winds and meanders its way through the Klaserie en route to its ultimate destination - the Indian Ocean off the coast of Mocambique. A real sight to behold is the large dust clouds that precede the large buffalo and elephant herds moving into the river system on a daily basis.

Breathtaking Sunsets

The perfect end to a perfect day.

The climax of the day, whether enjoyed from the hanging bar upstairs, or while out on Safari, the sunsets at Makumu are truly spectacular.

How to get to Makumu...

Airport Transfer

Due to the isolated location of Makumu, vehicle access is via 4x4 vehicle only. It is our recommendation that for International tourists, the airport at Hoedspruit Eastgate airport is utilized. With twice daily flights from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) to Eastgate, this is the more viable option. For any visitor either arriving or departing for the Cape, there are twice weekly flights to Cape Town. All guests utilizing the airport will be met by Makumu representatives and transferred to the Lodge, transfer time is approximately 1 hour.

For those indulging in self-drive to Makumu, we have also provided driving directions from Johannesburg.

Open Google Maps page for full map, detailed directions, and alternative routes.

Driving from Johannesburg

Travel along the N12 East passing Witbank (eMalahleni) through to Belfast, this section is approximately 200km. At Belfast follow signs to Dullstroom along the R540, continue through until reaching Lydenburg (Mashishing). Follow signs for Orighstad along the R36, approximately 40km after Orighstad you will enter the Abel Erasmus pass travelling through the J.G Strydom tunnel. The road will change to the R527 to Hoedspruit. The travelling time by road to this point from JHB is about 4.5 hours. Once through Hoedspruit travel towards Klaserie town for 7km. Turn left onto Argyle road (signposted Eastgate Airport) travel for approximately 20km until reaching the Access Control Security Gate.

Please enquire at this point for directions to Klaserie Private Nature Reserve Headquarters. All guests will be collected from this point.
